Hiring a contractor can be a stressful thing. We hear you!
Never fear, we’ve come up with a handy guide to determine which contractor you should hire.
What Questions Should You Ask?
Make a list of your questions before you meet with potential contractors.
Here are four questions that will form a good baseline of what this company will be like to work with.
- Who are your suppliers? This question works on a few levels. First, contractors tend to network with the same suppliers no matter what the job. Beyond checking a potential contractor’s references, you can see the quality of his suppliers. Plus, you can ask those suppliers about this contractor’s reputation. Are they difficult to communicate with? Are they reliable? Do they pay their bills?
- Who exactly will be at my house, doing the job? This question helps to clarify the process for everyone involved. It also helps you understand who will be around and what sort of access they will need. You should follow up with what this contractor expects of you. Do you need to be on site while work is being done?
- Will You Show Me Your Recent Work? Smart contractors have some sort of photo gallery on their website. Make sure that the style and vision you have in mind is something this contractor can do well.
- What is the best way to reach you? A good contractor is a busy contractor. But, they should be willing to communicate with you regarding your job in a timely manner. Be sure to open up those lines of communication early. If they are not clear about this - it may be a sign that further communication will be tough as well.
