The Portolá Expedition camped near Woodside in 1769 on its quest to find the San Francisco Bay. The land would later lie within the Rancho Cañada de Raymundo Mexican land grant given to John Coppinger. Settlers arrived early to log the forests of redwoods, making Woodside the oldest English-speaking community in the southern part of the Peninsula. By 1855, there were numerous mills operating in Woodside, and much of the lumber was used to build San Francisco’s first homes. The sawmills were gradually replaced by farms and country estates for wealthy San Franciscans. Today, Woodside still retains its rural character, and is among the wealthiest small towns in America with many residents employed in Silicon Valley. The town includes a small business district, several open space preserves and a network of horse and biking trails.
