Before Spanish explorers arrived, Pacifica’s coastline was populated by Ohlone Indians. Here, from the hills of Sweeney Ridge, the San Francisco Bay was first sighted in 1769 by the Portolà Expedition. The Bay then became the main Spanish harbor. Pacifica was later the site of the first structure to be built in San Mateo County, the Mexican-era Sanchez Adobe in 1846. Pacifica is a young California city, formed in 1957 by combining several previously unincorporated communities along a six-mile stretch of coast. Today Pacifica is a popular surfing, hiking and mountain biking destination with many restaurants and shopping venues. Its best-known attractions include Linda Mar Beach, Rockaway Beach and the Pacifica Pier. The Pacific Coast Fog Festival, held the last weekend in September, has become a coastside tradition.
