My father started Mr. Roofing in 1989, twenty-five years ago, and in all honesty I never would have guessed that I’d find myself here. It has changed my life.
I’ve never seen roofing as the most glamorous or exciting line of work, but it’s certainly necessary. I had my sights set on a college degree. After I finished college in 1997, my father asked me to join him in 1998.
I always tease a little about this industry: people aren’t in roofing because they want to be. I honestly wasn’t sure if I wanted to make roofing my career, so I did some due diligence and then it hit me: in California, contractors are licensed professionals like doctors, lawyers, CPA’s, dentists, etc… – but very few act like professionals! And the rest, as they say, is history!
Changing the Face of Roofing in San Francisco After doing my homework on the way contracting businesses are run, I decided Mr. Roofing could do things differently. By differently, I mean better, with an emphasis on education and professionalism.
And I think it’s made a difference.
As I look at my office right now, there are thank you cards from customers covering my walls. At the end of the day, our longevity as a company is most rewarding when we are serving the community.
Did you know that most roofing/contracting businesses only last two to three years? There are a number of factors involved, but we are still going strong.
All in the Family
The most rewarding part? This is still a family business. I may not literally be related to every employee, but our team members are like family.
Recently, my brother graduated from college, again, this time with his Ph.D. We hosted a party to celebrate his accomplishment and wanted our family and loved ones to attend. We invited the entire company as well as my family. We all gathered together to celebrate. It was a proud moment for all of us – some of the most fun we have had.
We also make it a priority to support our local community, especially children’s sports teams. It’s a great way for my family to connect and grow with other families. I can’t wait to see what the next twenty-five years bring….
