Spanish explorers named San Bruno Creek, which later gave its name to the community of San Bruno. The town began as a stop on the stagecoach route between San Jose and San Francisco. An inn known as Uncle Tom’s Cabin became one of most prominent landmarks in the town until it was demolished in 1949. By the 1880s, San Bruno’s ranch land was supplying milk, meat and horses to San Francisco. It remained a rural town until World War II, when the Army began using the local Tanforan Racetrack for the internment of Japanese-Americans. Following the war, the population boomed as much of San Bruno was converted into housing developments for returning military personnel. Today San Bruno is a bustling city adjacent to San Francisco International Airport. Since 2007, it has been the headquarters of YouTube.
