Palo Alto derives its name from a landmark coastal redwood tree named El Palo Alto, which still grows along the bank of San Francisquito Creek. The Portolá Expedition camped at this site during its exploration of the San Francisco Bay in 1769, and the names of many streets and landmarks within the city show the influence of early Spanish settlers. Considered the “Birthplace of the Silicon Valley,” Palo Alto is the location of many prominent technology and research firms, as well as portions of Stanford University. Palo Alto’s residents have taken great care to protect its open space and parkland. The city features more than 30 parks, providing habitat for a variety of birds and aquatic life, as well as convenient proximity to rich cultural and educational opportunities.
