The Ohlone Indians inhabited the Belmont area in early centuries, and the land later became a part of the 35,000-acre Rancho de las Pulgas. In 1867, William Chapman Ralston, a wealthy San Francisco financier, built an opulent country house in Belmont. Decades later, the mansion and surrounding estate became the campus of Notre Dame de Namur University – one of the oldest colleges in the state. Belmont offers many recreational opportunities, including Half Moon Bay State Beach, Aquarium of the Bay, the Hiller Aviation Museum and Water Dog Lake – a popular destination for water-loving dogs and their human companions. The town passed one of the nation’s strictest smoking ordinances in 2009, prohibiting smoking in all businesses and multi-story apartments and condos.
